Description

CAL Orcko & Cretaceous park – Sucre

CAL Orcko (quechua voice Cal Urqu, ‘ Hill of Cal ’) is a site paleontology of Bolivia, found in the quarry of a cement factory, close to the city of Sucre, in the Department of Chuquisaca. It is the place with the world most important dinosaur footprints, It contains more than 5.000 traces of 294 Dinosaur species.

The discovery is an enormous contribution to history and to the science, that it reveals not known so far about the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the tertiary, ago 66 millions of years, Thus documenting the high diversity of dinosaurs better than any other site in the world.

Until its discovery, the largest and most important site was Khjoda-Pil-ata, in Turkmenistan, and others in Portugal, Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland. CAL Orcko however, is several times greater than those: in other parts of the world only found up to 220 traces of only two species.

It is located to the East of the city of Sucre. The huge site is located on a cliff with a slope of 73 degrees, of 80 meters in height and 1.200 meters long. There are traces of 293 different species printed in the upper Cretaceous dinosaur species.

Location

It is located to the East of the city of Sucre. The huge site is located on a cliff with a slope of 73 degrees, of 80 meters in height and 1.200 meters long. There are traces of 293 different species printed in the upper Cretaceous dinosaur species.

History

The first finding of its existence goes back to 1985, but it was of 1994 to 1998 When a team of Bolivian paleontologists, Europeans and Americans led by Meyer studied and certified site.

It is time that workers drew attention to rare prints 1994 they were identified by a local expert as footprints of dinosaurs. In spite of that he could not achieve foreign experts to visit the place. Later a documentary of tourists who came to Switzerland made to accelerate the throbbing heart of the prehistory of Cristian Meyer researcher; dinosaur footprints specialist traveled to Sucre and became fascinated at what they saw. “It was a vision that let you breath”. The researcher knows personally all the important sites in the world, from Canada through the Seychellen to Turkmenistan.

CAL Urqu is a stroke of luck for several reasons. To start, the magnitude of the wall of limestone is impressive, more than 25000 square meters, the surface of several football fields filled with prints of traces. Meyer deduces that it makes 68 millions of years, dinosaurs lived on the shores of a shallow Lake, sweet and warm water, It stretched from the current de border to northern Argentina.

CAL Urqu was an immense shallow lake in the upper Cretaceous. In the tertiary, When was formed of the Andes, tectonic movements took this old bed to a vertical position.

In the past years will have discovered others eight deposits, currently in Studio.
One of the discoveries that astonished everyone was the footprints of Ankylosaurus, a quadruped herbivore that was thought non-existent in South America. This animal was portrayed as a clumsy and giant armadillo around eight tons, but with following studies of footprints showed that he was a tall and slender saury, long legs and lighter.

Also traces of herbivorous sauropods were found, including the giant titanosaur, of 25 meters and marks of 70 cm long, and large predators such as the theropods with traces of 35 cm. Also found traces of turtles, crocodiles, fish and algae of the upper Cretaceous, It will enable paleontologists more accurate studies on the time.

The footprints of the lizards and the remains of turtles, crocodiles, fish and algae are the end-Cretaceous, is for something very lucky Meyer. So far hardly existed that time data.

Creation of the Cretaceous park

For the conservation of this site opened in March of 2006 a spectacular Cretaceous park, in which there are exact replicas of the different species of dinosaurs that left their mark on the place, also will have a museum audiovisual for transportation to those visitors to the prehistory. The creation of the Park is due to the cooperation of the IDB, FANCESA, SOBOCE, In addition to artists sculptors of Bolivian origin.
