Description

Puerta del Sol – La Paz

The Puerta del Sol is part of the Monumental archaeological complex Tiwanaku, is located in the Northwest corner of the Temple of Kalasasaya. It is one of the most important material and symbolic representations of the tiwanakota metropolis. Carved in one piece of the andesite stone, account with 3 meters high, 4 meters wide and an approximate weight of 10 tons. Its front face presents a band carved with bas-reliefs, presents 48 figures of winged men and kneeling men, located around a main figure, known as the "Sun God" or "Lord of the poles". The trumpeters, located at the bottom of the low reliefs seem to mark with precision 105 Solar movements, Therefore, several researchers argue that the frieze could be a perfect calendar marking the dates of the agricultural cycles. The back has an outgoing upper frieze and other bottom that fits into the lintel of the door accompanied by small niches.

According to experts, the Puerta del Sol was part of a temple covered, possibly the pyramid Akapana or the same Temple of Kalasasaya. By its design features, its structure, the holes and the recesses in the monument they could fit with wood or stone sills. In the same way in the side sectors of the lithic set can be found entrabes to attach the walls sideways as part of a closed structure.
