Quiabaya Church
Located in the town's main square. The Quiabaya church dates back to colonial times, its construction having begun in 1640. The atrium stands out where the image of the Lord of San Pedro and the peculiar bell tower are located.. The community members tell their story of the building indicating that in the central part of the atrium there is a tunnel where, in colonial times, The nuns used it as clothing for religious ceremonies.. This enclosure was used in the War of Independence as a refuge and weapons depot.. There were vessels from the period and also human remains found there..
Apparently the tunnel had several underground exits which suggests that the church was built on top of a “huaca” which is the place used by the Andean settlers for their sacred rites.. Visits are made during the celebration of religious services, in coordination with the custodians or community members in charge of their care.
