Apolobamba Integrated Management Natural Area – Peace
Located in the extreme west of the Department of La Paz between the Bautista Saavedra Provinces, Franz Tamayo and Larecaja. Covers the municipalities of Pelechuco, Curve, charazani and Guanay. It is the “Ulla Ulla” Fauna Reserve since 1972 and Biosphere Reserve from 1977. It is the most important reservoir of vicuñas in the country. In 1997 was established as a Natural Area of Integrated Management (SECURITY).
It is characterized by the large number of ecological apartments that vary from 6.000 m.s.n.m. in the mountain range, until the 800 meters high in the Yungas montane forest. It has important biological diversity, concentrating typical animals from high altitude areas such as the vicuña., Jucumari (andean bear), taruca or Andean deer, deer, puma, andean cat, shock (wild duck) and the emblematic condor. It is estimated that the regional flora has around 1.500 species. It also has an attractive natural beauty mainly due to the imposing snow-capped mountains that rise in the mountain range such as the Akhamani Snowy, the President and Katantica. In the foothills there are lagoons and impressive glaciers such as Chaupi Orcko. The region is crisscrossed by archaeological sites and pre-Columbian roads. Its inhabitants are of Aymara and Quechua origin and live alongside the Kallawaya communities that preserve their ways of life and ancestral traditions almost unchanged.. You can reach the Protected Area from the City of La Paz following the route by land La Paz – Aut achachichi.. Puerto Cara buco – Ancoraimes – Escoma and Wilakhala, continuing to Charazani. There is a road detour before reaching the last town towards Ulla Ulla where an ambitious camelid project is being carried out and which is also another way to enter the Park.. The advisable season to visit the site is during the dry season., which includes the months of May to September.
