Kallawaya Culture – Peace

“Kallawaya” is a generic name to name religious doctors and itinerant herbalists who are direct descendants of the lineages that made up the ayllus dedicated to health care., science and religiosity of the Inca State. The Kallawayas are today settled in the towns of Curva, Chajaya, Shine, Huata Huata, Inka and Chari in the valleys near the Apolobamba Mountain Range in the Bautista Saavedra Province in the north of the Department of La Paz. During the colony its practices were prohibited, since they were associated with witchcraft, although they continued to practice their knowledge clandestinely.

In November of 2003 the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized in Paris the “Andean Worldview of Kallawaya Culture”, as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Its members are distinguished by the color of their clothing.. They wear colorful ponchos of various designs and woven bags where they put plants and other aid tools that are used for healing purposes., ceremonial and liturgical. In the region they are known as the Qolla Kapachajuy or great lords of the medicinal bags.. They are considered guardians of the Puquina the mother tongue of the Quechua equipious as the Machaq Juya, the secret language of the Incas. The Kallawayas were acquiring international prestige for their knowledge and wisdom in the management of pharmacopoeia and healing procedures..
