Ingavi Battlefields
The Ingavi Fields are located 12 kilometers of the town of Viacha. The Battle of Ingavi took place on this esplanade on 18 November 1841 between the then Republic of Bolivia under the command of Marshal José Ballivián and the Republic of Peru whose armies were under the orders of President Agustín Gamarra, who failed in his attempt to invade Bolivian territory. There the fate of what would become the Republic of Bolivia was sealed.. After the moments of political instability that Bolivia was experiencing at that time, due to the transition of three presidents and the dissolution of the Peruvian Confederation – Bolivian, Gamarra made the decision to invade the City of La Paz in order to create a “great Andean nation”. Notice of those intentions, Marshal Ballivián developed an attack strategy and enlisted his armies on these plains to defend the Seat of Government.. Despite the marked numerical inferiority of the infantry, The Bolivian army won the victory by wreaking havoc on the Peruvian ranks. This episode concluded with the death of Gamarra and 550 of his soldiers, Furthermore, the enemy front had 422 injured and 3.554 prisoners. Gamarra performed with 8 cannons, 3.000 rifles, 2.190 spears, large number of sabers and 4 banderas. The losses of the Bolivian army reached 208 dead soldiers and 434 injured. This battle marked the end of Peruvian hostilities in the Bolivian highlands..
