The Irohito Urus Community is located 30 minutes away from the town of Jesús de Machaca, Several families descended from the ancient Urus are settled there., considered the oldest culture of the South American Altiplano. During the 16th and 17th centuries this culture was absorbed by the Aymaras and later by the colonial regime.. Few of its inhabitants have remained isolated in their original habitat, being able to maintain their cultural traits..
An outstanding feature of this are its homes that resemble the shape of a cone., built with adobe (mud and straw).
They maintain the characteristics of nomadic peoples due to their dedication to fishing and hunting.. Just like your ancestors, They make straw and reed baskets (reeds) for the construction of traps. They worship nature, They venerate the volcanoes and the places known as “huacas”, home of the Achachilas or protective spirits and the Mallkus or wise men of the community..
