Ayo Ayo Colonial Church – Peace

Ayo Ayo is located 85 kilometers from the city of La Paz, on the road to the city of Oruro. The Ayo Ayo church is located in the town of the same name, It is a place with a rich and extraordinary history in the popular struggles for the independence of Bolivia. This convent was built during the colonial period possibly on an Andean “Huaca”., Its building was restored at different times. The design of the structure and decorations of the church show cultural syncretism and the indigenous vision – spanish, that would be historically expressed in the sociocultural mix of this town.

The material used in the structure is adobe and the façade is ashlar., It has a nave and chapels like a transept. Its exterior ornamentation belongs to the Baroque style., It is divided into three streets and three bodies, from where two Solomonic columns with capitals protrude, highlighting two rampant lions, Two anthropomorphic figures also decorate the jambs and above the arch-shaped door there is a human representation carrying canes in its arms., which is similar to the figure of the Sun Gate in Tiahuanaco. In the upper body the composition is repeated based on four-leaf pilasters., where you can admire the heads of pumas in the panels, in the middle of them a small window and a cross above it. The attached towers correspond to the 19th century , which is clearly noticeable by the dotted arcs; On the other hand, the restoration of the chapels corresponds to the decade of the 90 of the 20th century. The main altar has a coating bathed in gold leaf. To visit the church you must contact the caretakers of the convent and the priest.. It is possible to visit this attraction every day of the year, preventing climate changes in rainy seasons, like in dry season.
