Ponce Monolith – Peace

The Ponce Monolith is located inside the courtyard of the Kalasasaya Temple, in the eastern sector of the Tiwanaku Monumental Archaeological Complex. Possibly discovered in the 16th century with the arrival of the Spanish, since he has a cross carved on his right shoulder. However, its archaeological discovery dates back to 1964, when he was found buried in the central part of the temple. This piece was carved in andesite known for its hardness, which allowed its beautiful iconography carved on the entire surface to be maintained today..

The head is adorned with the typical Tihuanacota hat from which headbands fall with shapes similar to those that can be found in the ornamentation of the Puerta del Sol.; the body is decorated with feathers, condors and with the staggered symbol, endowed in turn with a rectangular center that ends in two fish-shaped heads.
