Snowy Illimani – Peace

The Illimani snow-capped mountain is also known by the names assigned to it by the residents of the Municipality of Palea and by the Spanish derivations of its Aymara name as “Jillir Mamani”.,with the meanings of “The Shining One”; “Golden Eagle” and “Eldest Son”. It is part of a large range of snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Real which has a length of 200 km, It is located at a distance of 40 kilometers in a straight line and 72 Kilometers along the highway from the urban center. It has snowy peaks that rise to 6.438 meters of altitude, becoming one of the highest mountains in the range, Its origin dates back to some 65 millions of years, It is a batholith of 8 kilometers long that is crowned by a glacier of extraordinary beauty considered by the Andean peoples a protective Apu or Achachila. His image is considered sacred in addition to being considered the symbol and guardian of the City.. It has 5 summits of various heights: The southern peak has a height of 6.462 m,s,n,m,; the so-called “Pico del Indio” with 6.130 m.s.n.m.; the northern peak also known as “Paris” of 6.402 m.s.n.m., The central peak or “La Paz” has 6.280 m.s.n.m. and finally the “Laika Khollo” peak with a height of 6.159 m.s.n.m. The dream of many climbers is to ascend the snow-capped mountain, some have achieved it by crowning the summit; others with fatal results. From its top you have an impressive view of the City of La Paz, in addition to the central highlands, Lake Titicaca and its surroundings to the neighboring country Peru. It is possible to get accommodation in the towns of Cohoni, Ouilihuaya and in the IIlimani Shelter located in Puente Roto a 2 kilometers away, from the main road of the camping area called Chapocko above the town of Pinaya.
