Machia Park – Tropic of Cochabamba

Machía Park, a state-owned Wildlife Custody Center, It has an approximate extension of 38 hectares and is located in Villa Tunari del Chapare, in the department of Cochabamba, headwaters of the Amazon. In 1996 with two spider monkeys, a capuchin monkey and a squirrel monkey, CIWY started the first refuge for wild animals in Bolivia in Machía Park. Today the Center houses more than 500 animals, of more than 30 species, even five threatened.

Tourists can visit a part of the park to see the free animals that live within it., many of them went through the rehabilitation process before being reintroduced. Many monkeys have formed groups and are often heard and seen in the treetops., playing and looking for food. Many species of birds are also seen.

The center is directed by the MVZ. Luis Morales, with the help of permanent staff and volunteers, those who work for a minimum of two weeks. In addition to the work we do in managing rescued fauna, We provide the people of the town with veterinary care for their domestic animals.

History
In 1996 The Municipal Council of Villa Tunari decided to allow the CIWY to use the park for its work with animals, becoming protectors of this area that was previously deforested. The land remains property of the Municipality, but over the years CIWY has purchased more land for its work, including accommodation for volunteers and infrastructure for handling animals, such as our aviary and clinic.

In 2009, The Municipal Council of Villa Tunari approved the construction of a vehicular road that would cross the park, in order to give access to other communities. During the same year, renowned primatologist Dr.. Jane Goodall visited Villa Tunari to speak out against the destruction the road would cause. Despite this and an international campaign that condemned the path, Its construction began in 2010. The road has loosened the earth, caused landslides during rainy seasons, not only making the road impassable for much of the year, but also contributing to additional habitat losses for animals. In 2010, four pumas were moved to Jacj Cuisi Park due to the loss of land.

Animals
More than 350 animals, of almost 30 different species, even endangered species like the spider monkey, the spectacled bear, the paraba and the turtle. The Center specializes in the management of capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, badgers and many species of birds.

The animals receive care from full-time veterinarians, permanent wildlife rangers and foreign volunteers. They are fed a diet based on their dietary requirements and provided with environmental enrichment to keep them busy and happy.. Besides, if possible, They are taken out of their enclosures for exercise and to give them the opportunity to explore their surroundings..

Visit the park
Tourists can explore a part of the park. The CIWY is only in charge of the administration of wildlife management and not of the tourism part. (The mayor's office is in charge of this part). However, Tourists are informed about the work of CIWY and the importance of respecting wildlife.

An entrance fee of Bs is paid. 2 a 6, what is for the municipality and is not intended for the activities carried out by the CIWY. For more information send an email to machia@intiwarayassi.org.
