The city of La Paz was founded by order of Don Pedro de la Gasca by Captain Alonso de Mendoza. The first founding document was in the town of Laja on 20 October 1548 and the second act in the Choqueyapu Valley in the San Sebastián neighborhood.
Emperor Charles V granted La Paz a coat of arms whose inscription reads: “The discordant in harmony in peace and love came together and people of peace were founded for perpetual memory.”
In the center of La Plaza there is a monument of three fractions, In the lower two, representations of the founding of La Paz are sculpted.. In the second fraction, Which is the highest is the statue of Captain Alonso de Mendoza.
