Putuni Archaeological Complex – Peace

Putuni is part of the Tiwanaku Monumental Archaeological Complex and is located west of the Kalasasaya Temple. The main entrance is close to the balcony wall of the temple.. Its name derives from the Aymara word Putuputuni which means “where there are holes.”, due to the series of funerary chambers that surround the central courtyard. It is also known as “Palace of the Sarcophagi” so it is deduced that the construction could have been used for the burial of personalities from the State of Tiwanaku.. It has a rectangular floor plan with 69 meters on its walls from east to west, 55.20 meters on its walls from north to south and a platform of 1.20 meters high with ornaments like plinths made of cut and carved stone externally and internally forming and enclosing a large central patio. Likewise, an excellent sewage system is evident that had channels and matrices located in the western part of the platform. 2 meters deep through which the wastewater was evacuated. In the interior walls there are funerary chambers with access to the central patio with a sliding stone door that slid when the floor was moistened..

The enclosure has three entrances: The main one was part of an imposing doorway of carved stone and lintel facing east.. The other entrances are on the north wall.
