What is Laqaya / Kakaya?

It is a place of ruins, considered one of the most important pre-Columbian settlements in the Lípez region and has been the subject of important archaeological studies. The site covers about seven hectares distributed in two important sectors: a fortified redoubt at the top of a hill and a town at its foot; which was applied between the 12th and 17th centuries AD. C. according to archaeological research, It was a time marked by profound social and political changes including the expansion and fall of the Inca empire.. The objects found in this place correspond to different periods, from pre-Inca to Spanish.

Structure and archaeological components

Laqaya is divided into three main sectors:

  1. Upper Laqaya
      - It functions as a fortified redoubt or pucará.
      - It has almost 100 enclosures.
      - It is naturally protected by a hillside and cliff.

  2. Torres
      - Area with more than 300 Type structures chullpa chullpa (funerary towers) stone.

  3. Lower Laqaya
      - Town closest to ground level, with some 200 simple enclosures.
      - In this area there is a main square of ~280 m².

The constructions use double stone walls filled with gravel, and the interior joints are sealed with mud.
