Yacuma Pampas – Beni

The Pampas del Yacuma Municipal Protected Area was created on 8 July 2007, through Municipal Ordinance 15/2007, with a surface of 616.453 ha. It is located in the municipality of Santa Rosa del Yacuma, in the Department of Beni, and inside there are nine communities (Cairn, Saint Christopher, Saint Bartholomew, Hummingbird, Villa Fatima, Awaizal, The Triumph, The Rosary and The Padlock) y 172 livestock ranches, with an approximate population of 7.000 inhabitants (76,65% of the total population of the municipality).

It is a critical area for the conservation of the flooded savannahs of the Llanos de Moxos due to its limited representation in other protected areas of Bolivia and because it presents unique characteristics in terms of its ecological dynamics related to annual floods., which has determined the composition and distribution of the vegetation. It comprises a complex mosaic of plant formations: flooded savannahs, wetlands, forest islands, gallery forests, with a predominance of grasses and sedges, aquatic plants, bromeliaceae, palm groves and emerging trees (boss, behind me, cedar, tajibo). In addition, It is home to a great diversity of wild animals, highlighting three endemic and highly endangered species, the lucachis ash monkeys (Chalices modest) and reddish (Goblets of pots) and the blue beard stopped her (Ara glaucogularis). Other relevant species are the swamp deer (Blastocerus dichotomus), to urine (Mazama will steal it), the huaso (American Mazama), the jaguar (Panthera onca), el borochi (Crysocyon brachyurus), the river dolphin (Inia boliviensis) the river peta (Podocnemis unifilis), the black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) and the lizard (Caiman yacare).

One of the objectives of creating the area is to make biodiversity conservation compatible with sustainable development.. Ecological tourism is one of the fundamental economic activities of the municipality of Santa Rosa, forming part of the tourist complex of Rurrenabaque and the Madidi National Park. Its greatest attraction lies in the pampas that surround the Yacuma River and in the large lagoons of the Benian savanna.. Annually they visit the protected area near 16 thousand tourists, representing a significant economic income for the municipality and affirming the need to conserve the biodiversity of the area.
