Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian – Cochabamba

Its official name is Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastián and it is located on the south side of the Plaza 14 of September, being considered National Monumental Heritage, History, Cultural and Architectural from 1967. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century on existing old temples from the 15th and 17th centuries..

The construction was commissioned by engineer Domingo del Mazo., made with lime, sand and stone and the works were completed although not completely concluded in 1630. The original project included two beautifully chiseled stone porticos: the one that exists today and that faces Esteban Arce street and another, that should have faced the main square but was never built.

The reconstruction of 1735 It occurred at the initiative of Don Francisco de Urquizo, rector and vicar of the Mother Church, original name of the Cathedral, who financed said restructuring from his own pocket.

The last major restructuring took place at the beginning of the 18th century, when the brand new diocese elevated the rank of the Mother Church and it became a Cathedral. Two new side naves were added to the only one that existed and the temple was left with the current three bodies..

This beautiful temple has a Latin cross plan with three bodies, It is considered to be of mixed baroque style with a portico with a beautiful façade made of stone.. It has double arches running from east to west and Solomonic columns that support its three bodies.. In the center it maintains an arch with a beautifully decorated circular window.. In the main nave, the vault of great architectural beauty stands out..

They stand out, definitely, the neoclassical style domes located in the center, In addition to its clock tower 126 feet high of impressive beauty also topped by a dome, It was completed after more than two centuries.

The interior is of unique splendor where you can appreciate the colonial architecture in all its dimensions.. The walls are full of drawings depicting biblical scenes, cherubs, floral arrangements and many other canvases detailing the devotion of the artists of the time.

It has been considered Metropolitan Cathedral since the year 1975, date on which the Diocese of Cochabamba was designated as metropolitan see by Paul VI.

The Cathedral is the center of Catholicism in Cochabamba and headquarters of the main liturgical and religious activities of this fervent city..
