Name: Tambo Quirquincho Museum

Location: Plaza Alonso de Mendoza corner Calle Evaristo Valle, in the historic center of La Paz.

Inaugurated as a municipal museum on 20 October 1988.

The building was originally a colonial mansion/dairy belonging to the chief Quirquincha.
History and architecture
-
In colonial and republican times, the “tambo” was a collection place, trade or accommodation for travelers.

The house was restored by architects Teresa Gisbert and José de Mesa to adapt it as a museum.

It has colonial architecture, two floors, with central patio around which the rooms are distributed.

Inside there are rescued architectural elements, such as a stone doorway of the old “Casa de los Ayesta” and a mestizo-style archway of the Convento de la Concepción.
Collection and exhibitions

The museum exhibits objects from the period colonial and republican, old photographs, masks, sculptures, contemporary paintings from La Paz and antique silverware.

It has exhibition rooms permanent and temporary.

In some spaces of the museum there is an auditorium called “Amalia Gallardo” and its central patio is used for concerts, fairs or other cultural events.

The museum has two floors with access from the Evaristo Valle Street and the Alonso de Mendoza Square.

About a patio central the exhibition rooms are distributed, administrative offices and other spaces.

An interior facade shows an 18th century arch with the crown of the king of Spain; The other interior façade has a mestizo baroque style archway recovered from a demolished convent.

There is talk of approximately one dozen rooms exhibiting historical objects, photographs, colonial and contemporary art.
